It’s no secret that the opening sequence of Rick and Morty Season 6 is one of the most iconic pieces of animation on television. From the synths that sound like they’re coming straight out of an 80s-era horror movie, to the bizarre science fiction visuals, it's undoubtedly one of our favorite parts about the show.
We’ve already talked about how the show is the perfect homage to one of our favorite horror movies: John Carpenter's The Thing. But, in case you missed it we’ve included a short recap of what we discussed below!
The Thing from Another World (1951)
We love this film because not only is it a typical "alien monster" story that's fun to watch. It also has some deeper elements regarding existentialism and isolation. In this film we see the ship crew just trying to survive until they can be rescued. And as we learn later on in the film, they may not be alone.
Rick and Morty’s Cthulhu Portal
This short is a glimpse into the Lovecraftian horrors that await Rick and Morty in their next travels through space. We know it won't be long before they find something more insidious than any of the evil aliens they've encountered to date.
It's no secret that when Rick and Morty travel to the far reaches of space they always discover some kind of evil. It's always terrifying but it never seems like there's a clear pattern to how their foes are defeated.
You can also see the deeper themes that appear in every episode of Rick and Morty. For example, if we look at “Rixty Minutes” we see how each of them are ultimately isolated in their own dimensions. This is the perfect example of existentialism in media.
Rick and Morty Season 1, Episode 5: Rixty Minutes
And through the entire show's run, it's always been apparent that Rick is possibly more insane than his grandson. What we never saw until this episode is his deep-seated anxiety about being a grandfather and a scientist.
This is exactly what the synopsis of "Cthulhu Rising" suggests: "The end of the world is nigh as Rick and Morty journey across dimensions to confront an ancient horror from another dimension!" (It's been pointed out that this isn't actually a summary of the episode itself, but nonetheless it's still true.
